There are so many things in our lives which we believe are under our control. But when we take a deeper look, the uncontrollable nature of life manifests itself in many different shapes and forms. These forces of uncontrollability relentlessly weigh on us each and every day. The more we try to control these forces the more we will struggle to find an inner peace and sense of self. As an individual we need to strike a balance between the two opposing forces in order to find our peace.
Through the use of unpredictable processes, such as aquatint, sugar lift, and shotgun blasts printed in relief, layered with highly controlled techniques in embossment and line etch, as well as utilizing color, texture, and shapes; I search for a balance in the imagery. The concentric circles in my work take on a few meanings, from the endless cycle of struggle to keep a balance, as well as the pulsating feeling of worry and stress. The control of the circles is contrasted with the energy and movement of the randomly placed marks inside the circles to create a balance and tension between the two forces.
