Creating with my hands allows me the ability to express ideas hidden in my soul.
Growing up working on cars and motorcycles gave me access to visualizing shapes and working with my hands. As time passed, my control over materials became finely honed. After many years of building and designing, vehicles became limiting for me. This then pointed in the direction of abstract art. More ideas and content could now be transferred to others in limitless ways. Free from the parameters of applied design, the mind/body/soul connection could be nurtured.
I create from mood and reaction. My work is both deliberate and experimental. Balancing the two is the most fundamental objective for my practice. When balance is achievement, my work is more enjoyable to create and to view. While conscious choices are made regarding shapes and materials, my unconscious leads the way. My attention to detail and fine craftsmanship opens up a space where intuitive choices can expand and flourish.
Hot Rod culture has been a big inspiration in my work. Terms like, low brow, have been attached to some of the work from this culture. Bright colors and lack of conceptual restriction resonates with me. Every person's art is an important creative way of expressing oneself. Getting lost in concepts that viewers cannot access, unless they are in the know, is not the direction I am interested in pursuing. My goal is to create work that everybody can relate. By accessing the soul to inform my decisions, viewers can relate through the mind and body.
